What Is a Turkey Timer?

A turkey timer is two tools in one: a cooking time calculator and a roast countdown. Enter your bird's weight and whether it is stuffed, and the calculator estimates how long to cook a turkey at 325 to 350°F. Hit start and it counts down the whole roast — hours, minutes and seconds — so you know when to pull it out and rest it. It replaces the mental math of figuring turkey cooking time per pound and the flimsy pop up timer that comes stuck in the breast.

How Long to Cook a Turkey

As a rule of thumb, plan on roughly 13 minutes per pound for an unstuffed turkey and about 15 minutes per pound for a stuffed one, roasting at 325 to 350°F. So a 12 lb unstuffed bird lands around 2 hours 36 minutes, while a 20 lb stuffed turkey runs closer to 5 hours. These are guidance figures — ovens vary, and a cold or partially frozen turkey takes longer. The calculator above does the per pound math for you, but treat the result as a starting estimate and let temperature be the final judge.

The Pop Up Turkey Timer Explained

Many store-bought birds come with a pop up timer — a small plastic stem with a spring held down by soft metal that melts and releases the button near 165 degrees in the breast. It is convenient, but it is not always reliable. It can pop late, leaving the breast overcooked and dry, or fail to pop at all if it was bumped or sat in a cooler part of the bird. Because it only reads one spot, it can miss the true doneness of the thighs. A digital meat thermometer in the thickest part of the breast and thigh (not touching bone) is far more accurate than any pop up timer.
