Sleep Cycle Timer

Work out the best time to go to bed or wake up. This sleep cycle calculator plans your night around the 90 minute sleep cycle so you wake up refreshed between cycles instead of mid-cycle.

To wake up at 7:00 AM, head to bed at one of these times.

Each option assumes about 15 minutes to fall asleep. Highlighted times give you 5 to 6 full cycles — the sweet spot for most adults.

What Is a Sleep Cycle Timer?

A sleep cycle timer is a simple calculator that finds the best time to go to bed or wake up based on your body's natural sleep rhythm. Instead of counting a fixed eight hours, it plans your night in 90 minute cycles so your alarm lands at the end of a cycle rather than in the middle of one. Wake up between cycles and you feel rested; wake up mid-cycle, deep in REM or deep sleep, and even a full night can leave you groggy. Enter when you want to wake up, or start the clock from when you go to bed, and the calculator does the rest.

How Sleep Cycles Work

Sleep runs in repeating stages that make up one full sleep cycle of roughly 90 minutes. Each cycle moves from light sleep into deep sleep and finally into REM, the dreaming stage where your brain is most active. Over a night you move through four to six of these cycles, and the amount of REM in each one grows toward morning.

The key idea behind this timer is that waking up at the end of a 90 minute cycle feels far better than waking up in the middle of one. When your alarm interrupts deep sleep or REM, you get sleep inertia — that heavy, foggy feeling. Timing your wake up to a cycle boundary is how you wake up refreshed, even on slightly less sleep.

Find Your Best Bedtime or Wake Time

The calculator works two ways. If you know when you need to wake up, it counts backwards in 90 minute cycles and adds about 15 minutes to fall asleep, then lists the best bedtimes. If you are heading to bed now, it counts forward through 3, 4, 5 and 6 cycles and shows the ideal wake times. Aim for the highlighted options — 5 to 6 cycles, or roughly 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep — which suit most adults. Choosing an earlier bedtime that gives you a full extra cycle usually beats squeezing in a few loose minutes.
