How Long to Soft Boil an Egg

Three minutes is a classic soft boiled egg — white just set, yolk completely liquid, the kind you dip toast into. Four minutes thickens the yolk slightly without setting it. Five gives jammy edges around a loose middle.

Lower fridge-cold large eggs into water already at a rolling boil and start the timer immediately. Starting in cold water makes soft boiling unreliable, because the result depends on how fast your pan heats.

Getting It Right

Boiling water, not simmering. A gentle simmer adds a minute or more and the timing stops being predictable.
Serve immediately. A soft egg carries on cooking in the shell; thirty seconds on the counter is thirty seconds more cooking.
Or shock it. Cold water straight away if you aren't eating it at once.
Room temperature eggs crack less when they hit boiling water.

For a jammy ramen-style centre use the medium boiled egg timer at 6 minutes, and for fully set yolks the hard boiled egg timer at 9. The egg timer page lists every time from 3 to 12 minutes.
