What Is a Business Day?
A business day is any working day of the week, Monday to Friday, when most offices, banks, and courts are open. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are not business days, and public holidays are often excluded as well. Business days are the standard unit for measuring shipping times, contract deadlines, and payment terms, because they reflect when work actually happens rather than raw calendar time.
Counting Business Days Between Two Dates
The first mode counts the working days between a start date and an end date. It walks through every day in the range and keeps only the weekdays, Monday to Friday, excluding weekends. If you turn on "Skip US federal holidays," any federal holidays that fall inside the range are also removed from the total. The result shows both the business-day count and the total number of calendar days, so you can compare working days to elapsed days at a glance.
Adding Business Days to a Date
The second mode adds a number of business days to a start date. Starting from the day after your chosen date, it counts forward one working day at a time, skipping weekends and optionally federal holidays, until it has added the requested number of business days. This is exactly how a "ships in 5 business days" or "due within 10 working days" promise is calculated. The output is the resulting calendar date.
Business Days and US Federal Holidays
When the holiday checkbox is enabled, this calculator excludes the standard US federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. When a federal holiday lands on a weekend it is normally observed on the nearest weekday, but since weekends are already excluded, the observed weekday is what matters for business-day counts. Note that these are US holidays; other countries and even individual companies keep different holiday schedules.
How Business Days Are Used
Business days appear throughout everyday agreements and logistics:
- Shipping and delivery estimates are quoted in working days, so a package ordered on a Friday may not begin transit until Monday.
- Contracts and legal notices frequently set deadlines in business days to give a fair number of actual working days to respond.
- Payment terms such as net 30 or "net 30 business days" define when an invoice is due, and net terms measured in business days push the due date past intervening weekends and federal holidays.
- Bank transfers and clearing settle on working days only, which is why funds initiated over a weekend post on the next business day.
