How Many Time Zones in the World?

The world uses 38 time zones today.

In theory the globe divides neatly into 24 one-hour slices. In practice, politics and geography got involved: India runs on a half-hour offset (UTC+5:30), Nepal on a quarter-hour one (UTC+5:45), and the Pacific island nations of Kiribati and Samoa pushed past the date line to UTC+13 and UTC+14. Stretch in the other direction to UTC−12 near Baker Island and you get 38 distinct local times in use. Counting named regions instead of offsets, the IANA time zone database tracks over 300 zones, because places that share an offset today may have different histories or daylight-saving rules.

💡 The full range from UTC−12 to UTC+14 means it can be three different calendar days on Earth at the same moment — for one hour a day, somewhere is finishing Monday while somewhere else has started Wednesday.

How Many Time Zones in the US?

The 50 US states span 6 time zones — and the US has 9 counting its inhabited territories.

The contiguous "lower 48" states use four zones (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific). Alaska and Hawaii add two more. US law also defines Atlantic time (Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands), Samoa time (American Samoa), and Chamorro time (Guam) — nine in total, or eleven if you count uninhabited outlying islands like Baker Island (UTC−12) and Wake Island (UTC+12).

How Many Time Zones in India?

India has just 1 time zone: India Standard Time (IST), UTC+5:30.

Despite stretching nearly 3,000 km from the deserts of Gujarat to the hills of Arunachal Pradesh — geographically about two hours of sun time — the whole country runs on a single clock. The unusual half-hour offset means India is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of London and 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York (in winter). In the far northeast, tea gardens have long used an informal "chai bagan" time an hour ahead of IST to make the most of early daylight.

How Many Time Zones in China?

China officially has 1 time zone: Beijing Time, UTC+8.

Geographically China spans five time zones, and before 1949 it used them. Today the entire country — from Shanghai to the far west of Xinjiang, over 4,000 km away — runs on Beijing Time. The result: in winter the sun can rise after 10 AM in western cities like Kashgar, and many people in Xinjiang informally keep an unofficial local time two hours behind the official clock.

How Many Time Zones in Russia?

Russia has 11 time zones — the most of any single contiguous country.

From Kaliningrad on the Baltic (UTC+2) to Kamchatka on the Pacific (UTC+12), Russia covers eleven consecutive hourly zones. When workers in Kaliningrad sit down to lunch, fishermen in Kamchatka are already asleep — ten hours ahead, in the same country. Russia abolished daylight saving in 2014, so the offsets hold all year.

How Many Time Zones in France?

France spans 12 time zones — more than any other country in the world.

Metropolitan France uses just one zone (Central European Time, UTC+1), but its overseas territories circle the globe: French Polynesia (UTC−10 and the Marquesas at −9:30), the Caribbean islands (−4), French Guiana (−3), Réunion (+4), Kerguelen (+5), New Caledonia (+11), and Wallis-et-Futuna (+12). Twelve zones in total — a quirk of geography that beats Russia's eleven.

How Many Time Zones in Australia?

Australia has 3 main time zones — which become 5 in summer.

The mainland splits into Western (UTC+8), Central (UTC+9:30 — another half-hour zone), and Eastern (UTC+10) time. Daylight saving complicates things: NSW, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania spring forward while Queensland, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia don't, splitting the country into five different local times each summer. Lord Howe Island even does a half-hour DST shift, the only place in the world that does.

How Many Time Zones in Canada?

Canada has 6 time zones.

From Pacific time in British Columbia to Newfoundland's distinctive half-hour zone (UTC−3:30), Canada covers six zones: Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern, Atlantic, and Newfoundland. When the national broadcaster announces a show "at 8, 8:30 in Newfoundland", that's the sixth zone talking.

How Many Time Zones in Brazil?

Brazil has 4 time zones.

Most of the population lives on Brasília Time (UTC−3), which covers the coast from São Paulo to the northeast. The Amazon states run an hour behind (UTC−4), Acre in the far west two hours behind (UTC−5), and the Atlantic islands of Fernando de Noronha sit an hour ahead (UTC−2). Brazil scrapped daylight saving in 2019.
