What Is a Coffee Brew Timer?
A coffee brew timer counts down the exact extraction or steep time for your brewing method so every cup comes out consistent. Time is one of the biggest levers in coffee: pull an espresso too fast and it is sour, steep a French press too long and it turns bitter. Coffee Brew Times by Method
- Espresso - 25–30 seconds for a balanced shot

Espresso Timer
An espresso timer keeps your shots dialled in. Start the timer as the pump kicks in and aim to finish extraction in 25–30 seconds — the sweet spot for a balanced shot. Watch the pour: it should start dark and slow, then finish with a lighter, honey-like stream. Pull it too fast and the shot runs sour and thin; let it run long and it turns bitter. Pour Over Timer
For pour over, timing the bloom matters as much as the total brew. Start the timer, add twice the coffee's weight in water to let it bloom and release gas for 30–45 seconds, then pour in slow spirals. Aim to finish your pours so the drawdown completes right around the three minute mark.
French Press Timer
A French press timer keeps you from over-steeping. Add coarse grounds and hot water, give it a stir, and let it sit for the full four minutes. Press the plunger down slowly at the end and pour right away so the coffee does not keep extracting.
AeroPress Timer
The AeroPress is fast and forgiving. Add coffee and water, stir for about ten seconds, seal with the plunger, then press gently over the last twenty to thirty seconds. The whole brew usually lands inside a minute and a half.
Tips for a Better Brew
- Use fresh beans and grind just before brewing
- Match your grind size to the method — fine for espresso, coarse for French press
- Keep water just off the boil, around 92–96°C (198–205°F)
