What Is Chronological Age?
Chronological age is the exact amount of time a person has been alive, measured from their date of birth to a specific date. It is usually written in years, months and days, such as 8;4;13 for 8 years, 4 months and 13 days. The word chronological separates it from other kinds of age, like developmental age, reading age or mental age, which describe performance instead of time.
Why Chronological Age Matters for Testing
Standardized assessments used by school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists and special education teachers compare a child with others of the same age. Scores are looked up in norm tables organized by age bands, often only a few months wide, so the examiner needs the child's exact age on the day of testing, not just their age in years. Getting the age wrong by even a few days can move a child into a different norm band and change their standard score.
How to Calculate Chronological Age by Hand
Write the test date above the birth date in year, month, day columns and subtract from right to left, borrowing when needed:
| Year | Month | Day | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Test date | 2026 | 3 | 5 |
| Birth date | 2017 | 10 | 20 |
| After borrowing | 2025 | 14 | 35 |
| Chronological age | 8 | 4 | 15 |
- Days: 5 is less than 20, so borrow one month from the month column and add 30 days: 5 + 30 = 35. Then 35 − 20 = 15 days.
- Months: the month column is now 2, which is less than 10, so borrow one year and add 12 months: 2 + 12 = 14. Then 14 − 10 = 4 months.
- Years: the year column is now 2025, and 2025 − 2017 = 8 years.
This manual method always borrows 30 days, while the calculator above counts the real number of days in the month (February 2026 has 28), which gives 8;4;13. The two methods can differ by a day or two. The calculator shows both, so you can match whichever method your test manual requires.
Should You Round Chronological Age?
It depends on the test. Some examiner manuals tell you never to round and to use the exact years, months and days. Others round to the nearest month, where 15 or more days rounds up. Always follow the scoring instructions for the specific assessment you are using. The calculator shows the unrounded age and the age rounded to the nearest month.
Corrected Age for Premature Babies
For babies born before 37 weeks of gestation, clinicians often use a corrected age (also called adjusted age) to judge development fairly. Corrected age subtracts the weeks the baby was born early from their chronological age. A baby born at 32 weeks is 8 weeks early, so at 6 months of chronological age their corrected age is about 4 months. Enter the gestational age above to see it. Correction is usually applied until about 24 months of chronological age.
