What Is a Ramen Timer?

A ramen timer is a simple countdown that tracks the cook time for instant noodles so they come out perfectly every time. Most instant ramen needs about 3 minutes once you add boiling water, and even a minute too long leaves you with mushy, overcooked noodles. Pick your noodle type below and the timer loads the right cook time and a quick tip, then counts down and chimes the moment your noodles are ready.

How Long to Cook Instant Ramen

Most packets and cup noodles are ready in about 3 minutes after you pour in boiling water. Want a firmer, chewier bite? Pull the noodles at 2 minutes. Prefer them softer, or cooking dried block noodles on the stove? Give them 4 to 5 minutes. Always check the packet, but these times work for nearly every brand of instant ramen.

Cup Noodles vs Packet Ramen

Cup noodles and packet ramen both land around the 3 minute mark, but the method differs. For cup noodles you fill the cup to the line with boiling water, close the lid, and let it steep — the noodles cook in the residual heat. A packet is usually boiled in a pot or bowl with the noodles and seasoning added, then covered. Either way, 3 minutes is the sweet spot for most brands, so the same timer works for both.

How to Use the Ramen Timer

  1. Pick your noodle type — firm, instant ramen, cup noodles, soft, or block noodles.
  2. Boil your water and pour it over the noodles, or drop them into a boiling pot.
  3. Hit Start (or press the spacebar) to begin the countdown.
  4. Wait for the chime, then stir in the seasoning and enjoy.
