How Old Is My Cat in Human Years?
Enter your cat's age above to convert cat years to human years. Cats grow up fast. A 1-year-old cat is roughly as mature as a 15-year-old person, and by their second birthday they are about 24. After that, every cat year adds about four human years. The calculator follows the age chart used by feline veterinary organizations and fills in the months for kittens.

Is One Cat Year Seven Human Years?
No, the seven-to-one rule does not fit cats either. It badly underestimates the first two years, when kittens race through childhood and adolescence, and overestimates the later years. A more accurate rule of thumb is 15 for the first year, 24 at two, then add 4 for every year after that.
Cat Life Stages
- Kitten: birth to 1 year. Rapid growth, play and learning.
- Young adult: 1 to 6 years. Fully grown and at peak health.
- Mature adult: 7 to 10 years, about 44 to 56 in human years. A good time to start watching weight and dental health.
- Senior: over 10 years. Many cats live well into their late teens, and twice-yearly vet visits help catch age-related problems early.
These stages follow the life stage guidelines published by the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the American Animal Hospital Association.
How Long Do Cats Live?
Indoor cats commonly live 12 to 18 years, and many reach 20 or more, which is close to 100 in human terms. Outdoor cats tend to have shorter lives because of traffic, fights and disease. Diet, weight, dental care and regular checkups all make a difference. Have a dog too? Try the dog age calculator.
