Matcha Preparation Timing
Unlike other teas, matcha isn't steeped — it's whisked. Use this 2-minute timer to time your whisking process. Sift 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder into a bowl, add 2-3 oz of 175°F (80°C) water, and whisk vigorously in a W or M motion with a bamboo chasen until frothy.
Matcha Preparation Steps
- Sift the matcha - Use a fine mesh strainer to break up clumps (30 seconds)
- Heat water to 175°F - Too hot ruins matcha's delicate amino acids
- Add a splash of water - Create a paste first to prevent clumps
- Add remaining water - Pour 2-3 oz of hot water into the bowl
- Whisk vigorously - Use fast W-shaped motions for 1-2 minutes until frothy
Types of Matcha
- Ceremonial grade - Highest quality, meant for drinking straight. Bright green, smooth, sweet
- Premium grade - Great for daily drinking. Slightly less vibrant but still excellent
- Culinary grade - Designed for cooking, baking, and matcha lattes. More astringent flavor holds up to milk and sugar
Why Matcha is Different
Matcha uses the entire ground tea leaf, so you consume all the nutrients rather than just what steeps into water. This means matcha has significantly more caffeine, L-theanine, and antioxidants per serving than regular green tea. The L-theanine provides calm, focused energy without the jitters of coffee.
